Paco’s Tacos

March 18th, 2005

4141 S Centinela Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90066
(310) 391-9616

Hungry? This is the place for you, but be ready for a long wait. Luckily the restaurant provides good chips and salsa in the lobby area, and drinks can be ordered from waiters that stop by. Even better, the drinks are added to your meal check, so you don’t have to worry about dealing with a separate bar tab. The margaritas are tasty, and use no sour mix. The mango margarita is good, but sweet. The salsa is spicy and smooth.

The entrees we had weren’t really anything special, athough that could be because we were so full of chips and salsa that we couldn’t enjoy them. The carne asada steak was of good quality and cooked well, but not extremely flavorful. The enchilada and taco platter was actually very good. The taco shell was fresh, though…which reminds me…by far the best part of the dinner was the fresh, warm flour tortillas brought with our meal. If you’ve never eaten fresh tortillas, do yourself a favor and visit Paco’s.

Don’t get me wrong — we’ll definitely be going back there. I think the dinner could have been enjoyed more as long as we don’t eat three buckets of chips while waiting for our table!

Pacifico’s

April 2nd, 2005

9341 Culver Blvd Culver City, CA 90232
(310) 883-3197

Fresh seafood and tasty Mexican food come together in this laid back restaurant with a fun, beach-style atmosphere. Even though Pacifico’s is in the middle of Culver City, the outdoor seating area is gated off and contains tables with straw umbrellas, blocking off the nearby streets. You can then concentrate on drinking their mojitos and eating their awesome fish tacos I’d never had fish tacos until here at Pacifico’s.

The prices are slightly on the expensive side ($13/entree), but if you’re willing to pay up you’ll definitely have a relaxing and enjoyable time.

Fassica

March 5th, 2006

10401 Washington Blvd Culver City, CA 90232
(310) 815-8463

If you’re ready to abandon your knife and fork, eat here. They serve spicy food that you eat with injera (traditional Ethiopian bread, kinda like a crepe but spongier). I recommend the doro wat (chicken stew), awaze tibs (spicy beef stew), and lentil stew.

Poquito Mas

March 12th, 2006

2215 Westwood Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90025
(310) 474-1998

For fast food Mexican (or, as they like to say, “fresh food, fast”), this place serves some high-quality meals. Make sure to stop by this place if you’re in the area and looking for quick, tasty Mexican food…if you do, you’ll want to go back for poquito mas. Recommended: beef tacos (lots of fresh cheese on them) or the tostada.

Malibu Seafood

April 3rd, 2006

25653 Pacific Coast Hwy Malibu, CA 90265
(310) 456-3430

If you want to escape the crowds and trendiness typical of most LA restaurants, and also want to eat tasty fresh seafood, take a short drive to Malibu and take a seat at Malibu Seafood. There is no indoor seating, however once you’re there, sit outdoors and enjoy a great view of the nearby ocean while trying one of their many fish & chips plates, steamed shrimp, or awesome clam chowder.

Be prepared, for this is not a fancy restaurant but rather a no-frills seafood stand, with patio seating. Anyway, after you stuff yourself, you can also walk across the parking lot and take a nice mini hike in the woody hills…and then return for a post-hike seafood snack.

Indo Cafe

May 29th, 2006

10428 1/2 National Blvd Los Angeles, CA 90034
(310) 815-1290

Indonesian food is hard to describe, but don’t worry because it’s nothing weird; it’s a nice cross between Thai, Chinese, and Indian. Whatever it is, it’s definitely among the tastier Asian cuisines, and you should try Indo Cafe if you’re hungry and in the area. Be sure to try the ayam bakar padang (grilled chicken with spicy sauce and potatoes), nasi kuning (yellow rice combination), and chicken satay.

Annapurna Cuisine

May 29th, 2006

10200 Venice Blvd, Culver City, 90232
(310) 204-5500

Good vegetarian Indian food at good prices. Their chana masala (garbanzo beans in sauce) is great, as is their vegetable korma, both of which come with bread, not rice — although you can get rice, too. Nice, friendly people run and own the place, which is a nice touch.

Wood Ranch BBQ & Grill

May 29th, 2006

189 The Grove Dr #Y80 Los Angeles, CA 90036
(323) 937-6800

This is a good place to go for large steaks, awesome sides, and good beer. Watch out, though, because it’s busy on the weekends.

AOC

May 30th, 2006

8022 W 3rd St, Los Angeles, 90048
(323) 653-6359

An incredible restaurant with a huge wine and cheese selection, and tasty tapas. Make absolutely sure you get the bacon-wrapped dates as an appetizer, and don’t be afraid to ask the wait staff for recommendations.

Breadbar

June 24th, 2006

8718 West Third Street Los Angeles, CA 90048
(310) 205 0124

Not really a restaurant, but more of a bread market that serves breakfast and lunch, Breadbar makes some of the best and freshest breads and baguettes around. Their breakfast omelettes are unique, and make sure to get a bag of what they call “Wall Street”, little grape sized nuggets of chocolate and vanilla cake.

Tuk Tuk Thai

June 24th, 2006

8875 W. Pico Blvd Los Angeles, 90035
(310) 860-1872

A small, cozy Thai restaurant with great curries and unique Thai-style appetizers and dishes. Their pad see ew is also good, although their pad thai isn’t. The best thing you can do is order their mango and sticky rice dessert — the sweetest rice, the softest mangos…seriously, words can’t describe it.

Lucky Devils

March 11th, 2007

6613 Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood, CA 90028
(866) 492-0002

The tasty, meaty Kobe beef burgers are the reason to eat at Lucky Devils, which also has a huge selection of European beers (both on tap and in bottles). You can’t beat that combination. Be prepared to leave very full because the burgers are large and because you’ll order a few beers.

Orso

March 25th, 2007

8706 W Third St, Los Angeles, CA 90048
(310) 274-7144

Good Italian food is relatively hard to find in LA, so this restaurant is a great find. The portions are huge, which is strange considering this is a mid- to high-end restaurant. Be sure to make reservations, and try to get seated in the outdoor patio. Celebrity sightings occur frequently here, apparently.
